Home Theater Connections – Sony Bravia?
I’m not an audiophile so just looking for some expert insight, not a product review.
I have Sony DAV-HDX279w Bravia Surround Sound system (5.1). I have a Cox DVR & HD tv/channels. It seems like a lot of times on cable, only the sub and L & R speakers work and not the center/surrounds. All seems to be good when I’m playing DVDs. Sony support said I should get one of the following cables to address this. What does using either one of those get me?
1. Digital audio input (coaxial)
2. Digital audio input (optical)
Last night I did hook up a digital coax from the theater system to my DVR, but the sound had a significant echo.
Also, if anyone has used the iPod dock with this system, I’m curious about how to get the video to display on the tv. I can run Pandora radio though the sound, but thought I’d be able to see it on the tv too.

Sony support is correct. The only way to get true surround is by using the digital audio output of your set-top box. This can be either coax or optical.
You also have to go to the set-top settings and specify the digital out to be Dolby Digital. However, even then not all channels broadcast in 5.1 all the time.
On the receiver, set it it to Auto or Dolby Digital, you don’t want any extra processing like Dolby pro Logic. Check also if you have any special modes like “Theater” or “music hall” that may add extra reverb (echo).
